Direct answer
For kids under 5, vanilla bean or a simple chocolate sponge is almost always the right call. Ages 6–10 enjoy red velvet, chocolate truffle, and mango. Older kids and teenagers usually want chocolate truffle or filter coffee. We quietly steer parents away from heavy fondant designs for under-3s.
Younger kids prefer flavours they recognise. Vanilla bean, very light chocolate, and a simple cream cheese frosting work best. The smash cake at a first birthday should be very forgiving: buttercream, not fondant, and a sponge that will not crumble dramatically when slapped.
By age 5 or 6, the palate widens. Red velvet enters the picture. Chocolate truffle works if the cake is not extremely dark: under 60% cocoa is the right move. Mango cakes are loved by kids because the sweetness is natural and the texture is forgiving.
By 10, kids start asking for grown-up flavours. Filter coffee buttercream, dark chocolate orange, even rose pistachio if the family eats that at home. The mistake we see most often is parents choosing a flavour they want and ignoring the child's actual preferences. Ask the kid.
The thing we steer people away from: extremely sculpted fondant cakes for under-3s. They look great in photos but most three-year-olds will not eat fondant. The bottom of the cake is what gets eaten; the top gets photographed. Plan accordingly.
