How to transport a tiered cake without ruining it

Direct answer

Transport tiered cakes flat on a non-slip mat in a cool box, with each tier dowelled and the top tier carried separately if possible. Drive slowly. We deliver and assemble at the venue ourselves for tiered cakes; we strongly recommend you do not move one yourself.

A two-tier cake should be transported assembled, with the bottom tier supported by central wooden or food-safe plastic dowels that the top tier rests on. Three-tier and above, we transport the top tier separately in its own box and assemble at the venue.

The base should be a non-slip mat or a damp tea towel inside an insulated cool box. Drive slowly, brake earlier than you would for groceries, take wide turns. Air conditioning on full. Most damage happens in the last 200 metres, on the trolley between the car and the table.

For us, this is not a thing you outsource. We do the delivery and the on-site assembly for every tiered cake we make. The driver carries a small kit: extra buttercream, piping bag, leveller, replacement flowers. If anything has shifted, they fix it before they leave.

If you absolutely have to move one yourself, get it as flat as you can, keep it cool, and unbox it on a stable surface only after everything else for the event is ready. Do not unbox a cake into chaos.

Questions on this

  • Can I take my wedding cake on a road trip?

We strongly recommend against it for tiered cakes. A single-tier 1 kg cake is fine for an hour or so in a cooler bag.

  • Do you set up at the venue?

Yes, every tiered cake we make. It is included in the price, not an add-on.
